So this meal was my first somewhat disappointing experience from packit.
The broth and the veggies were amazing, however the meat never fully rehydrated and the dumplings just dissolved. Also there was a strange bitterness that I couldn't put my finger on.

It also seems the recipe may have changed since my purchase as the calories are different now so my quibbles may have been fixed, but unfortunately I have 3 more of these...

I took the Dottie's Chicken and Dumplings with me on a 4-day backpacking & climbing trip to Como Lake in Colorado along with many other Packit Gourmet meals. First off all, I want to let the readers know that I rated ALL the other meals 5 forks but I just can’t with this one. I don’t really know what it was that made this almost unpalatable for me. My partner was jealous of all my other Packit meals, but just like me, he thought is was subpar. It was bland and some of the dumplings had a raw doughy consistency. I’m giving it 3 forks because it was edible just not enjoyable. I will definitely be purchasing all the other Packit meals again, but this is a no go.

I like to try trail meals at home before using them on the trail so I insure that the meal will be good. This meal was very tasty, seasoned just right and the portion size was perfect. What would you suggest if I wanted a thicker sauce; less water or longer steeping time ?

Seriously good, one of my favorites. Flavor is exceptional, like homemade. Glad to enjoy it in the backcountry.

I don’t know if I have ever reviewed this or not but this is amazing. I love it and always make sure I have DC&D in my pack. Most of the time I bring two or three. I love it. Taste is good cook is easy. I can’t recommend enough.

My wife and kids (8 and 13) all enjoyed this meal. Very good taste, but I agree with the other reviewer who suggested using less water...I'll use less when I buy my next packet. The only detractor, if you can call it that, was the peas never fully softened up. They tasted great (very sweet in fact), but were a bit crunchy even after 20 minutes. I'd give this 4.5 forks if that were possible...I'll definitely buy again!

Received these about a month ago in the new packaging. Went on a backpacking trip this weekend and couldn't wait to have Dottie's Chicken and Dumplings. Sadly, it was SO SALTY that I had to add about double the water after it had steeped to be able to eat it. I couldn't wait to bite into a sweet pea to offset. I'm hoping that it may have been an off batch. I have another meal and will try that....hoping it was a FLUKE. Overall, I have always been happy with the taste and quality but wanted you to know that the salt made this meal almost unbearable. Will rate after I have tried the second pack.

Hi Mary, Thank you so much for notifying us about your experience with our Dottie's Chicken and Dumplings. We're truly horrified to hear this news and sincerely apologize for any mistake that may have occurred on our end. We are actively looking into why and how this may have happened to ensure that no other customers share your experience. Thankfully, this is the first we've heard of an overly salted or spiced Dottie's Chicken and Dumplings.

Packit Gourmet is a very small family-owned and operated company and all of our meals are hand-mixed in small batches. We taste test every single batch that is made in order to avoid a situation such as this. We absolutely understand that our customers are most likely enjoying our meals in a remote location with no access to additional food or water. Because of this, we take quality control extremely seriously to ensure that eating one of our meals is always an enjoyable experience.

I'll be contacting you directly to further remedy this situation and again, we sincerely apologize for your negative experience. It's truly disappointing and does not embody Packit Gourmet's commitment to our meals, from creation to our customers.

Solid meal. Tasty and filling. Sadly, in an inexplicable move, they have dropped the protein by about 15 grams and increased the sodium. What?? Still pretty good though.

A great meal! Very filling and delicious. I did use less water than it calls for and it was perfect. I will definitely get this again.

I'm not usually a big fan of other people's chicken and dumplings, but after trying my husband's I will be ordering my own for our next trip. Sharing isn't acceptable when it's that good!

Super food for a backpacking meal! Very hearty and lots of flavor. Chicken tasted like real chicken and hydrated well. My wife and I shared this with some Rustic Skillet Bread. Great meal! Will buy more.

Always one of my favorites! Flavorful and filling. Easy to prepare and well worth the short wait for steeping.

Wonderful meal, will be ordering many more shortly, grate taste, good price, ships fast and is very easy to track. And a persinal favorite for me about this meal is if you make it in a pot, the pot is easy to clean after,

Prep and "cook" was super easy! Great flavor, enough that I thought my grandmother was right there with me in the backcountry cooking. If you are one hungry guy after hiking or whatever, get this!

I was a little concerned at the 10 minute mark that this was looking more like a thin brothed soup, but at the 20 minute mark (in my cozy, of course) it was thick and beautiful. I started hyper-salivating like Pavlov's dog immediately upon smelling it after the "grand opening".
Wonderful and hearty. Comparable to a premium canned soup, yet better. Large portion fed three of us for lunch.
As with all backpacking food, allow it to rehydrate for a minimum of 20 minutes (longer if you can stand it) in a cozy so it stays HOT and it'll turn out just right.

Very good taste and texture. Only complaint was when made with amount of water on directions it made a soupier chicken and dumplings than I'm accustomed to. If/when I order again (and it's good enough to order more), will try reducing water by a 1/2 cup or so and see if that gives the consistency I like.

by Kyle Goulet
Very Good if a little thin, I will add less water next time. I put mine in with some minute rice and it made a very filling meal.

by CoreyR
Tasty. Unlike many Pack it Gourmet meals, which I find to be far too spicey, this was just right. It did not taste "rehydrated" at all.

by Binfordw
This is GOOD. One of my favorite packit gourmet meals so far. As others said, I would liken it to chicken noodle soup though, not dumplings. Rivals anything out of a can.

by Valerie Nelson
What can I say? I love this - perfect serving size, great flavor. I usually cobble up my own dishes but for this I will splurge.

by Debra PODESTA
very good and filling, will order this again.

by Vincent Petty
Now this was a dish that came out very well. All the flavors came together for a dish that tasted great and with little hint that it my have been a freeze dried backpacking meal.

by Henry S
This is what we would call in the South "Chicken and Pastry" or " Chicken and Slicks" The dumpling is more like a super noodle than a biscuit like dumpling that others would be expecting. All good, just different. This is one of my first Packit Gourmet choices for my post Thanksgiving AT trip in VA.

by Tara Crocco
Yumm yumm and more yumm. This meal is soo good. Tasted soo fresh and good consistency too.

by Clint Kearns
Re-hydration is very good. In fact this needs less water than suggested. Pouch calls for two cups and we cut it back to 1.5 cups. It comes out very thin and soup like with the full 2 cups. The flavor is good but a little bland. Needs pepper and and some other seasonings. A very good meal.

by Steve A
This is like chicken noodle soup on steroids, packs an amazing flavor punch. i tried this one at home and boy oh boy I wish I could soups as good as this around home. Kimi is right though for u s Canucks these are not the dumplings we are use to.

by Kim Varey
We trialed this at home and while the flavour was great, we couldn't find anything resembling dumplings (in Canada dumplings are basically biscuits cooked in stew or broth). Will order again, but will make real dumplings to accompany.

This one got rave reviews from our taste testers — one guy said, “Tastes like real food!” I can personally say it’s one of the best prepackaged trail meals I’ve tried. With roasted chicken and dumplings in a thick, savory gravy, it reminded me of something Grandma might make.

Craving comfort food on a chilly evening? Dig into this prep-in-the-bag meal, loaded with melt-in-your-mouth dumplings and crunchy cornbread croutons. The broth blends smoky mushrooms with sweet carrots and peas, and it's chockablock with bits of tender chicken.

Why is a Cook–in–Cozy™ recommended?

We recommend that all of our hot meals spend time "steep-cooking" while snuggled in a Cook-in-Cozy. We find this method promotes a more consistent temperature and steady cook time for Cook-in-Bag preparation; and results in a better serving temperature for your meal. When not in use, our Cook-in-Cozy folds away nicely in your pack for storage and weighs in at only 1.4oz.
