This meal has a really good flavor and it’s just something a little different — I mean, who eats something like this on trail?

— Homemade Wanderlust: My 5 Favorite Backpacking Meals, YouTube Video, January 2019

A very easy meal indeed – one pot style and doesn’t need a lot of water... Nice mild spicy hint underneath and very creamy.

frequently asked questions

What is Gluten Conscious?

Gluten Conscious is a term we use to describe a product that is prepared with gluten free ingredients; however, it is not prepared in a gluten-free environment. While we are careful to avoid cross-contamination, it is possible that trace amounts of gluten may be present due to the use of gluten in our facility.
Why is a Cook–in–Cozy™ recommended?

We recommend that all of our hot meals spend time "steep-cooking" while snuggled in a Cook-in-Cozy. We find this method promotes a more consistent temperature and steady cook time for Cook-in-Bag preparation; and results in a better serving temperature for your meal. When not in use, our Cook-in-Cozy folds away nicely in your pack for storage and weighs in at only 1.4oz.

The polenta wasn't thick and creamy, even though I followed the instructions for putting in 1 cup of water. I also steeped it for a full 15 minutes (over the recommended 10 minutes). Otherwise, it tasted good and was well-spiced.

Tasty. Like others have noted, I think it would benefit from a little less water; otherwise, it becomes a soup. Of course I don't carry a graduated beaker with me! It would benefit from a little extra flavor (salt & pepper), but it's fine the way it is.

I took this for breakfast on a two day backpacking trip. I added 8oz of boiling water as stated on the package, but the flavor was bland. I might try less water if I get it again.

There is nothing wrong with this meal - I just found it very, very bland. It was filling - just not enjoyable or flavorful. This is the only PackItGourmet meal I have had that I wouldn't order again - so disappointing considering that everything else I have had it outstanding.

This was actually something I would eat for breakfast at home. Solid flavors. I would suggest making sure you really get in the corners of the bag when mixing...my only criticism and it was my fault. :)

Great flavor but 9oz is too much. Ruined 2 meals...next time I'm gonna use 60z Staff reply Hi Richard, I'm so sorry that adding 9 ounces of water was not the consistency you were hoping for. Since reading your review we have done many in-house tests and we do feel comfortable with the flavor and consistency that 9 ounces delivers. For your future Polenta dishes, and for other customers, if you are seeking a thicker polenta I recommend starting with 7 ounces of *boiling* (very impt!) water and adding more if needed. The beautiful thing about Polenta is that you can always add more to make it thinner without compromising the dish!

Had this for breakfast. What a great way to start the day! 9 ounces of water made it a bit to soupy but it was still a good breakfast on a chill morning. Consider it a lesson learned

This meal has a really good flavor and it’s just something a little different — I mean, who eats something like this on trail?

10/10 would pork again. This is fantastic. I would eat this for lunch and dinner too.
