This one got rave reviews from our taste testers — one guy said, “Tastes like real food!” I can personally say it’s one of the best prepackaged trail meals I’ve tried. With roasted chicken and dumplings in a thick, savory gravy, it reminded me of something Grandma might make.

— BSA Boys' Life Magazine, October 2015

Craving comfort food on a chilly evening? Dig into this prep-in-the-bag meal, loaded with melt-in-your-mouth dumplings and crunchy cornbread croutons. The broth blends smoky mushrooms with sweet carrots and peas, and it's chockablock with bits of tender chicken.

Why is a Cook–in–Cozy™ recommended?

We recommend that all of our hot meals spend time "steep-cooking" while snuggled in a Cook-in-Cozy. We find this method promotes a more consistent temperature and steady cook time for Cook-in-Bag preparation; and results in a better serving temperature for your meal. When not in use, our Cook-in-Cozy folds away nicely in your pack for storage and weighs in at only 1.4oz.

It will fill you up but you will want to add your spice of choice as it is very bland. Wish I would have had some pepper and salt to add to this because it is a hearty meal. Would buy again but only if I'm packing in some spices with me.

So this meal was my first somewhat disappointing experience from packit. The broth and the veggies were amazing, however the meat never fully rehydrated and the dumplings just dissolved. Also there was a strange bitterness that I couldn't put my finger on. It also seems the recipe may have changed since my purchase as the calories are different now so my quibbles may have been fixed, but unfortunately I have 3 more of these...

I took the Dottie's Chicken and Dumplings with me on a 4-day backpacking & climbing trip to Como Lake in Colorado along with many other Packit Gourmet meals. First off all, I want to let the readers know that I rated ALL the other meals 5 forks but I just can’t with this one. I don’t really know what it was that made this almost unpalatable for me. My partner was jealous of all my other Packit meals, but just like me, he thought is was subpar. It was bland and some of the dumplings had a raw doughy consistency. I’m giving it 3 forks because it was edible just not enjoyable. I will definitely be purchasing all the other Packit meals again, but this is a no go.

I like to try trail meals at home before using them on the trail so I insure that the meal will be good. This meal was very tasty, seasoned just right and the portion size was perfect. What would you suggest if I wanted a thicker sauce; less water or longer steeping time ?

I don’t know if I have ever reviewed this or not but this is amazing. I love it and always make sure I have DC&D in my pack. Most of the time I bring two or three. I love it. Taste is good cook is easy. I can’t recommend enough.

My wife and kids (8 and 13) all enjoyed this meal. Very good taste, but I agree with the other reviewer who suggested using less water...I'll use less when I buy my next packet. The only detractor, if you can call it that, was the peas never fully softened up. They tasted great (very sweet in fact), but were a bit crunchy even after 20 minutes. I'd give this 4.5 forks if that were possible...I'll definitely buy again!

Received these about a month ago in the new packaging. Went on a backpacking trip this weekend and couldn't wait to have Dottie's Chicken and Dumplings. Sadly, it was SO SALTY that I had to add about double the water after it had steeped to be able to eat it. I couldn't wait to bite into a sweet pea to offset. I'm hoping that it may have been an off batch. I have another meal and will try that....hoping it was a FLUKE. Overall, I have always been happy with the taste and quality but wanted you to know that the salt made this meal almost unbearable. Will rate after I have tried the second pack. Staff reply Hi Mary, Thank you so much for notifying us about your experience with our Dottie's Chicken and Dumplings. We're truly horrified to hear this news and sincerely apologize for any mistake that may have occurred on our end. We are actively looking into why and how this may have happened to ensure that no other customers share your experience. Thankfully, this is the first we've heard of an overly salted or spiced Dottie's Chicken and Dumplings. Packit Gourmet is a very small family-owned and operated company and all of our meals are hand-mixed in small batches. We taste test every single batch that is made in order to avoid a situation such as this. We absolutely understand that our customers are most likely enjoying our meals in a remote location with no access to additional food or water. Because of this, we take quality control extremely seriously to ensure that eating one of our meals is always an enjoyable experience. I'll be contacting you directly to further remedy this situation and again, we sincerely apologize for your negative experience. It's truly disappointing and does not embody Packit Gourmet's commitment to our meals, from creation to our customers.

This one got rave reviews from our taste testers — one guy said, “Tastes like real food!” I can personally say it’s one of the best prepackaged trail meals I’ve tried. With roasted chicken and dumplings in a thick, savory gravy, it reminded me of something Grandma might make.

Not a fan. It has a funny taste, can't quite describe it.

We're truly horrified to hear this news and sincerely apologize for any mistake that may have occurred on our end.

Solid meal. Tasty and filling. Sadly, in an inexplicable move, they have dropped the protein by about 15 grams and increased the sodium. What?? Still pretty good though.
