What is the Baking Kit?

We’ve discovered a quick and easy way to bake on the trail, which combines steaming with silicone. Steaming bread is a common way to bake when an oven isn’t available but it’s always been hard to come up with steam-friendly cookwear. We’ve combined silicone muffin cups with a silicone steamer to solve this problem. Simply set the steamer in your pot with a little water and place your filled muffin cups on top. Place a lid on your pot and steam away – you’ll be enjoying baked goods in no time!

My 13 year old son and I just returned from a 4-day backpacking trip in Shenandoah National Park. We had the Molten Chocolate Lava Cakes on day 2, and he said: "this is the best thing I have ever had while camping." I must say, I totally agree!

The Lava Cakes come in a two serving size, with each serving two cakes worth. I packed one-quarter of the mix (about 1/4 cup, 59 ml) for one cake. They are cooked by steaming. Packit Gourmet offers silicone muffin cups and a 2.3 oz (65 g) silicone steamer but I passed. I used a silicone mini-Bundt pan I have and rested it on rocks in the bottom of my titanium pot. I used about 0.5 oz (15 ml) of fuel to steam the cake for about 8 minutes and removed it from the heat when the cake cracked as the directions advise. I let it sit for two minutes and then enjoyed the deep, rich taste of warm chocolate. Very good!

These got rave reviews both times I made them. I actually got 5 full cakes out of this mix when using the muffin cups that come with the baking set on this site. I also cooked them a little longer than the instructions said and they turned out fine.

I took these to girl scout summer camp and the girls LOVED them. They were amazed at how easy they were to make and how tasty. On the trail they are a well deserved treat that makes the day. Wonderful!!
