frequently asked questions

How many cups of freeze-dried chicken are in the 2 ounce package?

Our 2 oz package of FD chicken is about 1-1/8 cups of dry chicken.
How many calories and grams of protein are in 1 Tablespoon of FD Chicken?

There is approximately 12.77 calories and 3 grams of protein per Tablespoon of FD Chicken. Please keep in mind that the chicken dices vary in size, and therefore weight, so this is an approximation based on the total weight of the chicken in the pouch, and the nutritional information we have based on that amount.

Once rehydrated, what quantity of ready-to-eat chicken is made from the 2 ounce package?

Our 2 ounce package of chicken rehydrates to about 1-1/3 cups of ready-to-eat chicken.
Tried at home and have some left still in original packaging. Will this still keep for a while or do I need to use soon after opening? Thanks!

The 'best by' date on your package applies to an unopened package of FD Chicken, but if the previously opened bag is stored properly, you can still achieve the quoted shelf-life. It's important to push all air out of the bag and securely seal the bag — oxygen will negatively effect the freshness of the chicken. Double-bagging or placing the bag in an air tight container is even better. Secondly, store your bag in a dark, dry place at 70 degrees or below. For more tips, please see our blog post "How To Store Freeze-Dried and Dehydrated Foods" (https://packitgourmet.com/blog/index.php/2019/02/18/storage-shelf-life-of-dried-foods/)
For the freeze dried chicken, pork, and beef — if I open it and put the product in to a ziploc bag, what is the expected shelf life?

We do not recommend storing your remaining FD Chicken in a Ziploc bag. Ziploc bags are clear and very thin, allowing oxygen, light and humidity to negatively effect your chicken. We recommend using a Mylar Bag (this is what our FD Chicken will come packaged in & we sell them on the site individually) which acts as a very efficient barrier to all of these.
Can it be stored in the freezer to extend the shelf life?

Due to the high humidity levels that can be found in freezers, we do not recommend storing your FD Chicken in the freezer. A dark, cool and dry pantry works great!

Very tasty and easy to rehydrate for whatever meal or snack your heart desires. I always keep a small container of it in my camp kitchen box for emergencies. Call me crazy but I also enjoy munching on smaller pieces as-is!

We were in Yosemite and had mashed potatoes, Pack It Gourmet white chicken meat, and Pack It Gourmet dehydrated peas for a delicious meal. We rehydrated the chicken and peas with hot water and used hot water to rehydrate the Idaho instant mashed potatoes. Added the chicken and peas to the potatoes in their foil pack and had a great dinner in the Grand Canyon of the Tuolumne River in Yosemite .we used 2 2 oz packets of chicken and half of the packet of green peas plus instant mashed potatoes for three people .

This freeze-dried chicken worked really well. It tastes identical to premium quality canned white meat chicken but weighs very little. I use it for dinners and lunches. For the latter, I put the chicken in a small cup and dribble water on it until I like the consistency and then stir. Meanwhile, I prep the rest of my meal -- a filling for pita bread. That takes a couple minutes. Then I pour the filling into the cup and stir. The whole process takes about 3-4 minutes and the chicken is fully dehydrated and the filling, with chicken, is ready to stuff into the pita bread. Super quick and easy way to get protein while backpacking! The chicken tastes and has the texture of non-freeze-dried chicken. Really great product!
